Xiuguluan River, Mountain river in Hualien County, Taiwan.

The Xiuguluan flows roughly 104 kilometers from highland peaks at about 3,000 meters elevation down through Hualien County until it reaches the Pacific Ocean. Its course cuts through steep valleys and rock formations that shape the character of the entire waterway.

The river basin was home to Amis and Bunun peoples for centuries, who had adapted to life in this mountainous region. The arrival of settlers during the late Qing dynasty brought significant changes to the landscape and the existing communities.

The name comes from the Amis language and refers to the river mouth where the Qimei people continue their traditional festivals and age-based social practices. Visitors can observe these customs in the local communities that live along the banks.

The best rafting section spans about 24 kilometers between two key bridges and is accessible from May through October when water levels rise with the rains. Visitors should know that conditions vary by season and good footwear is essential for navigating the terrain.

Over time, erosion and flowing water have carved limestone rocks into shapes resembling different animals, creating what locals call the Zodiac stone area. These natural sculptures took shape without any human intervention and offer a surprising geological wonder.
