Dounan Township

Dounan Township is an urban township in Yunlin County that sits on flat terrain sloping gently from east to west at about 33 meters above sea level. It comprises 22 villages such as Tungren, Xiqi, and Nanchang that together form the local community.

The area was originally called Taliwu after an indigenous group before being renamed during Japanese rule in 1920. After World War II, it gained township status as an independent administrative unit in 1946.

Farming remains central to daily life here, with rice fields and vegetable crops shaping the landscape and reflecting how people have worked the land for generations.

The township is easily reached via National Freeway 1 or Dounan Station on Taiwan Railways, both offering good connections to nearby areas and cities. Visitors will find the flat terrain makes cycling a practical way to explore the various villages.

The 22 villages have developed distinct specializations over time, with some known for rice farming and others focused on vegetable production. This division of labor has created different local traditions and economic patterns that remain visible today.
