Chimei Museum, Fine arts museum in Rende District, Taiwan
The Chimei Museum is a fine arts museum in Rende District, Taiwan, displaying its holdings across several thematic buildings. The exhibition rooms show Western paintings, natural history specimens, historical weapons and armor, plus a large collection of string and keyboard instruments.
Shi Wen-long established the museum in 1992 as a private institution funded by profits from his company Chi Mei Corporation. The institution moved into a new building on Wenhua Road in 2014 and greatly expanded its exhibition space.
Visitors find an extensive collection of European musical instruments kept in climate-controlled rooms and regularly used in concerts. The museum allows professional musicians to borrow selected historical instruments and use them in performances.
The museum opens from Thursday to Tuesday between 9:30 AM and 5:30 PM and sits near Bao'an Station with easy access. Visitors should plan several hours to explore the different collections housed in separate exhibition buildings.
The collection includes more than 1,300 violins, among them the Guarneri del Gesù 'Ole Bull' from 1744, considered the last completed work by this Italian violin maker. Some of these instruments are loaned to professional musicians and regularly heard in concert halls worldwide.
