Siyu East Fort, Military fort in Xiyu Township, Taiwan
Siyu East Fort is a stone fortification that covers approximately 7 hectares and features a U-shaped layout facing directly toward the sea. High defensive walls and the arrangement of structures throughout the site demonstrate how the entire facility was designed for coastal protection.
The fort was built in 1889 under orders from Qing Dynasty governor Liu Mingchuan as part of a defense network created after the Sino-French War. Its location on the Penghu coast was strategically chosen to guard against attacks from the sea.
The fort displays traditional Chinese military design through its gray stone walls and how it sits along the Penghu coastline. Visitors can see how the structure was built to serve a protective purpose.
Access begins at the main entrance, where informative panels explain the military significance of each structural element throughout the site. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the grounds are expansive and require considerable walking.
Three restored British-made Armstrong cannons were installed in 2008 and showcase the coastal defense technology from the late 1800s. These weapons serve as working examples of the military equipment that was once used here.
