Siyu West Fort, Military fort in Xiyu Township, Taiwan
Siyu West Fort is a military fortification on basalt terrain with sturdy stone walls and strategic defensive positions. Four artillery emplacements are positioned around its perimeter to command the surrounding waters.
The fort was built in the 17th century by Ming Dynasty general Chen Guoxuan as a defense against Qing naval forces. It became a key point in the maritime conflicts of that period.
The fort shows how soldiers adapted their building style to what the island offered. Local stone and coral became the main materials for walls and structures that still stand today.
The site is reached via the Penghu County Bus Blue Line with connections from Penghu Airport and Magong Harbor. The grounds are uneven with little shelter, so bring sun protection and sturdy footwear.
Three British-manufactured Armstrong guns were installed in 2011 as part of the fort's military display. These cannons from a different era stand beside the original stone fortifications.
