Jianshan Xianji Temple, Chinese temple in Jianshan Village, Taiwan
Jianshan Xianji Temple is a Chinese temple in Jianshan Village, Penghu County, Taiwan, built using traditional wooden construction methods by local craftspeople. The building features carved decorative elements and painted roof tiles typical of religious architecture in this part of Taiwan.
The temple was founded in 1781, during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, making it one of the oldest surviving religious buildings in Penghu County. Over the centuries it went through several renovation phases while keeping much of its original structure.
The temple is dedicated to the deity Xie An, whose worship has been passed down through the village for generations. During festivals and ceremonies, the building fills with offerings and activity that remain a natural part of daily life here.
The temple is easy to reach by car, with parking available on site, and the area around it is generally open and uncrowded. A major restoration project started in May 2024 is reshaping part of the site, so it is worth checking conditions before visiting.
During a 1950s renovation, the temple was rebuilt using a mixed-construction technique that combined older craft methods with materials common at that time, a combination rarely seen elsewhere in Penghu today. This makes the building a rare surviving example of a transitional moment in local construction history.
