Ostroh

Ostroh is a city situated along the Horyn River on rolling terrain with elevated areas that shape its character. The settlement spreads across this varied landscape, with its historic structures positioned strategically on the higher ground.

The city began around 1100 as a fortress ruled by local princes and gradually became a major administrative hub. This early military role shaped its long-term importance and influence throughout the region.

The Academy founded here in 1576 became a beacon for learning and religious thought across eastern Slavic lands. You can still sense this scholarly heritage as you walk through the town and see how deeply it shaped local identity.

The city connects easily to other urban centers in western Ukraine through a network of regional roads. Getting around and reaching the main sites is straightforward thanks to these established routes.

The castle consists of four main buildings including a Guard Tower and Bohoiavlenska Church arranged on an elevated oval plaza. This distinctive layout on the raised plateau shows an unusual approach to how the fortress was designed and built.
