Ostroh Castle, Medieval defensive castle in Ostroh, Ukraine.
Ostroh Castle is a medieval fortification in the town of Ostroh featuring four main structures arranged on an elevated oval plaza. These include the Guard Tower, New Tower, Bohoiavlenska Church, and a Belltower completed in 1905.
After Mongol forces destroyed wooden fortifications in 1241, the Ostrogski family acquired the town in the late 14th century and built the stone castle. This construction marked the shift from temporary to permanent defensive structures in the region.
The Guard Tower houses the Ethnography and History Museum, while the Lutsk Tower functions as a museum dedicated to the history of book printing.
The grounds include a deep well accessible from the basement, and stone walls reach up to 2.6 meters (8.5 feet) thick with multiple rooms across several levels. Visitors should expect uneven floors and narrow staircases when exploring the different stories.
High cliffs on the southern and eastern sides provide natural defenses, while moats guard the northern and western approaches. This blend of geographic and human-made barriers made the fortress one of the hardest to capture in its era.
