Khust, Historical settlement in Carpathian Ruthenia, Ukraine

Khust spreads across the confluence of Rika and Tisza rivers at 164 meters elevation, forming an administrative center in western Ukraine.

The settlement emerged around a defensive castle constructed in 1090 by King Ladislaus of Hungary to guard against external invasions.

The city contains architectural heritage including a 13th-century Protestant fortress church, an 18th-century Baroque Catholic church, and a Greek Orthodox church.

The region experiences an oceanic climate with January temperatures averaging -2.8°C and July temperatures reaching 19.6°C during the year.

The settlement's name originates from either the Hustets stream, meaning 'kerchief', or from husti, a Romanian food ingredient.
