Khust Raion, Administrative district in Zakarpattia Oblast, Ukraine
Khust Raion is an administrative district in western Ukraine covering a large area with numerous settlements and villages scattered throughout. The district contains several religious facilities, including female Orthodox monasteries in Dragovo-Zabrod and Lipcha, along with male Orthodox institutions in Iza and Khust-Kolesarovo.
The region took its current form through administrative reform in 2020 that consolidated multiple districts together. This change created Khust Raion as one of six districts within Zakarpattia Oblast.
Wooden churches in villages like Danylovo, Kraynikovo, Sokirnytsia and Oleksandrivka serve as centers of community life for local residents. These structures show how people built sacred spaces using traditional carpentry methods passed down through generations.
The district is best explored from smaller local towns that serve as gateways to the various monasteries and villages. The warmer months offer the best conditions for visiting, as rural roads are more accessible during this time.
Two medieval castles shape the landscape: Khust Castle from 1191 and Vyshkovsky Castle from the 13th century. These fortifications reveal that the region once held strategic importance during conflicts between different powers.
