Synevyr, Mountain lake in Zakarpattia Oblast, Ukraine
Synevyr is a mountain lake in Zakarpattia Oblast, Ukraine, sitting at 989 meters above sea level and reaching depths of up to 22 meters. The water surface covers around 29 hectares within the Carpathians, surrounded by dense coniferous forests and steep slopes.
The body of water formed around 10,000 years ago when an earthquake triggered tectonic shifts and altered the Carpathian terrain. The movements shaped a natural basin that filled with water over time and developed into today's lake landscape.
The name connects the tragic love story of a count's daughter called Syn with her beloved Vir, whose fate is reflected in the waters. Hikers encounter this narrative at several spots around the shore, where wooden sculptures and plaques remember the two.
Three mountain streams supply the body of water with fresh inflow throughout the year, maintaining stable levels. Visitors find constructed paths around the shore with benches and viewpoints that ease access to different perspectives.
A small islet rises in the middle, known as Sea Eye, and stays just beneath the surface at all times. Depending on water level, this feature can sometimes become visible or disappear entirely.
