Gymba, Mountain summit in Zakarpattia Oblast, Ukraine
Gymba is a mountain summit in the Ukrainian Carpathians, sitting at around 1,500 meters above sea level. Dense forests cover the lower slopes and give way to open alpine meadows as you approach the top.
The area around Gymba was used as a natural crossing point between communities on both sides of the Carpathians from medieval times onward. Traders and herders passed through these slopes regularly over the following centuries.
Shepherds still bring their flocks to graze on the open slopes of Gymba each summer, following a practice that has shaped this landscape for centuries. The temporary wooden shelters they use can sometimes be spotted from the hiking paths.
The summit is most easily reached from the village of Pylypets, where several marked trails begin. Ski lifts run in winter, and the hiking paths are open during the other seasons.
The rounded, dome-like top of Gymba makes it possible to look out over three separate administrative districts of the region at the same time. This is a rare natural arrangement not found at nearby summits.
