Basilian Monastery of St. Nicholas in Krekhiv

The Basilian Monastery of St. Nicholas is a stone monastery complex arranged as an irregular pentagon with defensive walls and multiple buildings. The compound includes bell towers and various structures for religious ceremonies and communal life.

Founded in 1612 by monks from the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, this community received crucial land support from Stanisław Żółkiewski during its early establishment. The monastery experienced trials over the centuries but endured as an active religious center.

The monastery serves as a center for Greek Catholic faith and draws large pilgrimages on May 22 during the Whitsunday celebration. Visitors come to experience living religious traditions that have remained active in this community for centuries.

The monastery lies roughly 40 kilometers northwest of Lviv and welcomes visitors interested in Ukrainian religious history. Walking through the compound allows you to see all the buildings and understand the layout of the complex properly.

The monastery was forcibly closed in 1949 during Soviet occupation and many monks were imprisoned, yet the community later returned to active worship. This return demonstrates the determination of believers to maintain their religious life despite hardship.
