Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet, Opera house in central Lviv, Ukraine.
The Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet is an opera house in central Lviv that combines Renaissance Revival and eclectic architectural elements. The building displays three allegorical figures on its facade, and the main hall holds around 1100 people.
Construction started in 1895 after local authorities and citizens raised funds for a grand theater on Holukhovskykh Square. The opera house opened in 1900 and quickly became one of the city's most important cultural venues.
The opera house bears the name Solomiya Krushelnytska after the famous Ukrainian soprano who performed here in the early 20th century. Visitors see detailed wall paintings and sculptures inside that depict figures from classic operas and ballets.
The theater sits at 28 Svobody Avenue in central Lviv and is easy to reach on foot. Guided tours through the building are available and allow visitors to see the interiors outside of performance times.
The foundation used reinforced concrete, a new construction method at the time, marking one of the first uses of this technique in Lviv. The architect Zygmunt Gorgolewski designed the building after the model of the Vienna State Opera.
