Ukrainian Dramatic Theatre of Maria Zankovetska, Neoclassical theatre in central Lviv, Ukraine
The Ukrainian Dramatic Theatre of Maria Zankovetska is a neoclassical building in the centre of Lviv that was constructed between 1836 and 1842. It accommodates around 1,500 spectators and displays 19th-century architectural features with decorative details throughout its exterior and interior halls.
The building was constructed by architects Jan Salzmann and Ludwig Pichl on the site of former Lower Castle bastions. Over time, the venue transformed from a German-Polish theatre into a concert hall before eventually becoming home to Ukrainian dramatic performances.
The theatre is named after Maria Zankovetska, who became the first person to receive the People's Artist of Ukraine title in 1922. Her name represents the importance of Ukrainian stage art and the legacy of this pioneering performer.
The theatre offers two performances per day, typically from Tuesday through Sunday, with various dramatic productions scheduled throughout the season. Check the programme in advance to find a show that suits your interests, then arrive with plenty of time to find your seat in this historic venue.
The theatre's foundation was built using approximately 16,000 oak logs, which still support the building today. This unusual construction method was necessary to ensure stability on the swampy ground where a fortress once stood.
