Bakhmach, city
Bakhmach is a city in the Chernihiv region of Ukraine, located along the Borzenka River. It serves as a major railway junction where five railway lines intersect, providing connections to Moscow, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Minsk, and Kyiv.
The city is first mentioned in records from 1147, when it was a fortified settlement. In the 19th century, it grew rapidly around the railway as the line between Kyiv and Moscow was constructed.
The name Bakhmach comes from Turkic roots and means 'bastion' or 'fortress'. The city keeps old traditions alive, where you can see people gathering for local events and markets to exchange fresh produce and handmade goods.
The city is easiest to reach by train, as it sits on multiple railway lines and is regularly served by trains. Visitors should use the quiet streets to explore the local museums and railway infrastructure.
The railway station was built in 1954 in an unusual neo-Gothic style that stands out in the region. An old steam locomotive from the 20th century sits in front of the station and has become a local symbol.
