Zhytomyr, Administrative center in Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukraine
Zhytomyr is a city in northern Ukraine that serves as the administrative center of its namesake oblast, spreading along the Teteriv River. The city sits at 221 meters elevation and connects residential districts with industrial and green areas along the waterway.
The settlement was founded in 884 under the leadership of the Drevlian prince and later grew into an important trade center during the Kievan Rus period. Over the centuries the city changed hands several times between Polish, Lithuanian and Russian powers.
The name comes from Prince Zhytomyr of the Drevlians, whose settlement once stood along the Teteriv River. Today the central square carries his name and reminds visitors of these early roots.
Trolleybuses, trams and minibuses connect the different districts and offer an affordable way to get around. Many routes pass through the center and make it easier to reach museums, parks and public squares.
Granite has been quarried in the surrounding area for centuries, and local deposits give the cityscape a particular character. Many older buildings and monuments display this local stone in different shades and textures.
