Monaster św. Anastazji Rzymianki w Żytomierzu, Orthodox monastery in Zhytomyr, Ukraine
The Monastery of Saint Anastasia of Rome is an Orthodox women's monastery located in Zhytomyr, in central Ukraine. It consists of several church buildings with gilded domes and stone facades, all enclosed within a wall that separates the monastic grounds from the surrounding city.
The monastery was founded in 1999, during a period when many religious communities across Ukraine were reestablishing themselves after decades under Soviet rule. It stands as one of the newer Orthodox monasteries in the Zhytomyr region.
The monastery is named after Saint Anastasia of Rome, a martyr venerated in the Orthodox faith since the 4th century. Visitors can observe the iconostasis inside the main church, which features hand-painted icons in a traditional style.
The monastery is generally open daily, and mornings tend to be a good time to visit when the grounds are calm and liturgical services may be taking place. Visitors should dress modestly, with shoulders covered, and women are expected to wear a head covering inside.
Although the monastery was founded at the end of the 20th century, the nuns who live there follow a daily rhythm close to that of medieval communities, with set prayer times structuring the entire day. This rhythm becomes noticeable for visitors who spend time on the grounds.
