Water tower in Zhytomyr

The water tower in Zhytomyr is a modern brick structure standing 31 meters tall with an octagonal shape accented by two rows of decorative metal elements. The two internal water tanks worked together to supply the city with water through gravity distribution.

The structure was built in 1898 to support the newly installed water pipeline system in the city and marked a major step in modernizing urban infrastructure. With its completion, Zhytomyr began managing water supply the way larger European cities did.

The tower has been recognized as a cultural heritage site since 1996 and shows how the city managed water distribution to its streets. Visitors can see the two tiers with decorative metal details that reflect the technical progress of that era.

The tower is located on Pushkin Street 24 and is easy to reach on foot while exploring the area. Visitors can view the exterior from different angles, and it is best to come on days with good weather to see the details of the metal cladding.

During World War Two, the tower served as an observation post for aircraft warnings and helped the city detect attacks early. This military role is no longer visible in the structure today, but it is an important part of the local wartime history.
