Ruzhyn

Ruzhyn is an urban-type settlement in Zhytomyr Oblast in western Ukraine, spread across gently rolling terrain. The community functions as a regional administrative center with connections to surrounding municipalities and sits at about 214 meters (700 feet) elevation.

The settlement was first recorded in 1071, though it only received its current name in 1596 when Count Kirik Ruzhynsky renamed it from its original name Sherbiv. This name change marked a turning point in the community's identity and development.

This settlement served as a center for Jewish education and community life, with schools that welcomed students from different ethnic backgrounds. The local history and buildings still reflect this multicultural heritage today.

The settlement is best explored on foot or by bicycle, as most significant areas are within easy walking distance of each other. The best time to visit is between May and September, when weather is mild and generally dry.

Archaeological discoveries near Ruzhyn reveal artifacts from the Trypillian culture, a prehistoric civilization that flourished around 5000 years ago. These findings show that the region has been inhabited for thousands of years longer than most people realize.
