Tomashpil, Rural settlement in Vinnytsia Oblast, Ukraine
Tomashpil is a settlement in eastern Podolia that sits on the Rusava River in central Ukraine. The community serves as an administrative center for the surrounding area at an elevation of about 243 meters.
The settlement was founded in 1616 when the region was under Polish control as part of the Braclaw Voivodeship. The area came under Russian Empire rule following the Second Partition in 1793.
The name Tomashpil merges the Polish name Tomasz with the Slavic suffix -pil, showing how different languages shaped this place over time. You can sense this mixed heritage when walking through the settlement today.
The settlement has basic infrastructure and services for visitors and residents to use. Having your own transportation is best for getting around and exploring the wider area, as public transit options are limited.
In January 2024, the settlement underwent an important administrative change and lost its status as an urban-type settlement. This reclassification reflects broader shifts in Ukraine's recent local governance.
