Maidan Nezalezhnosti, Central square in Kyiv, Ukraine
Maidan Nezalezhnosti is a square in Shevchenko Raion, Kyiv, Ukraine, extending across multiple levels that connect underground shops with open-air spaces above. Pedestrians move through wide staircases leading to different elevations, while sculptures and water basins divide the layout.
The site developed from a medieval swamp and received new names over the centuries according to the ruling political power. After the Soviet Union collapsed, it was renamed in 1991 to mark national independence.
The name recalls Ukraine's independence in 1991, and today visitors see flags, memorial stones and inscriptions marking political movements from recent decades. On weekends families gather around the fountains while street musicians perform and mobile stands sell snacks.
The square remains accessible around the clock and offers several exits leading to neighboring streets and bus lines. Visitors find public restrooms in the underground section and can connect directly to three different metro lines from there.
During winter months part of the square transforms into a temporary ice rink that draws skaters from across the city. Beneath the surface runs a network of passages linking shops, cafés and corridors to neighboring buildings.
