Hlukhiv, Historic municipality in Sumy Oblast, Ukraine
Hlukhiv is a city in Sumy Oblast in northeastern Ukraine, situated along the Esman River. It contains around 50 preserved architectural monuments spread across a heritage park that occupies a significant portion of the central area.
The city served as the administrative center of the Cossack Hetmanate from 1708 to 1764, a period when it became a major political center in the region. This role shaped much of what exists there today.
The singing school established here in 1738 became the first of its kind in the Russian Empire and changed how musical training was organized across the region. Walking through the city today, you can still sense this musical heritage in the old buildings connected to that tradition.
Most visitors explore the historic buildings on foot, as they are clustered within the central area. Arriving early in the day works well for getting a feel for the place and avoiding crowds.
A research center for bast fiber crops including hemp operates here, maintaining the city's connection to agricultural science. This working institution shows that the place looks forward as well as back to its past.
