Hlukhiv Fortress

Hlukhiv Fortress is a military fortification located in the central part of Hlukhiv in Ukraine. The fortress contains defensive walls, towers, and multiple gates with the Kyiv Gate from 1766 standing as its most recognizable architectural feature.

The fortress was constructed to protect important trade routes connecting major regions and served as a defensive stronghold. It gained prominence during the 1664 siege when defenders successfully repelled a major Polish military assault.

Multiple churches once stood within the fortress walls, including St. Nicholas Church built in 1693 and Transfiguration Church from 1765. These religious buildings shaped the daily life of residents and their presence remains visible today throughout the site.

The fortress remains are located in the central part of Hlukhiv and are accessible on foot. Several architectural elements can be seen from the main street, making them easy to view while walking through the city.

The name Hlukhiv derives from an ancient term referring to the fortress's impregnability, highlighting its reputation as a protective stronghold. This historical naming reflects the significant respect the fortification commanded during its time.
