Okny, Settlement town in Podilsk Raion, Ukraine
Okny is a small settlement in Podilsk District in Ukraine, located 93 meters above sea level on the banks of the Yahorlik River. The river is a left tributary of the Dniester and shapes the natural environment of the place.
Moldovan settlers established the settlement in the late 18th century following the 1792 Peace Treaty of Iasi, which transferred territories between the Southern Bug and Dniester to Russian control. This change marked an important shift in the region's political structure.
The settlement is known by different names across languages: Okny in Ukrainian, Okny in Russian, and Okni in Hebrew, marking its multicultural heritage. These linguistic variations reflect the diverse communities that have called this place home throughout its past.
The M13 highway connects the settlement to Kropyvnytskyi to the northeast and extends toward the Moldovan border to the southwest, continuing through Transnistria to Chișinău. This road is the main transportation link for moving in and out of the area.
In January 2024, the settlement was reclassified from an urban-type settlement to a rural settlement, marking a major administrative change in Ukraine's local governance structure. This status shift demonstrates how the country continues to reshape its administrative divisions.
