Bratslav is a settlement in Nemyriv Raion within Vinnytsia Oblast, situated along the Southern Bug River. The place sits at about 201 meters in elevation and has been reorganized administratively over time.
The settlement was founded in 1362 and gained Magdeburg Rights in 1564 under Polish-Lithuanian rule. Throughout the 18th century it experienced several changes in control between different powers.
Rabbi Nachman lived here from 1802 to 1810 and founded an important Jewish spiritual movement. His stay shaped the place's role in Jewish history and drew followers from across the region.
