Dovzhansk, Industrial center in Luhansk Oblast, Ukraine
Dovzhansk is an industrial town in Luhansk Oblast in eastern Ukraine, located near the Russian border. The settlement spreads across an area with twelve coal mines and four coal enrichment facilities that dominate the townscape.
The settlement began in 1701 as a small village and grew with the expansion of the mining industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. The place received town status in 1962 under the name Sverdlovsk and was renamed several times after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The town has carried the name Dovzhansk since 2016, replacing its Soviet past and returning to local Ukrainian roots. Families often work in the same industrial plants across generations, shaping a tightly connected community.
The town sits at an elevation of 268 meters and serves as the administrative center for surrounding communities. Travelers should be aware that the region is subject to special security conditions due to its proximity to the Russian border.
The settlement passed through at least four different names before its current designation, including Dovzhykove-Orlovske and Sharapkyne. The renaming in 2016 was part of a nationwide program to remove Soviet place names across Ukraine.
