Tustan, Medieval hillfort in Urych, Ukraine
Tustan is a medieval hillfort in Urych in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine. The site sits among tall sandstone cliffs that rise above the wooded valley.
The fortress was built in the early Middle Ages to protect important trade routes through the mountains. After centuries of use, the place was eventually abandoned and fell into obscurity.
The name comes from a time when this rock formation served as part of an important defense system. Visitors today can still see the symbols carved into the stone that traders and guards once left here.
The climb to the rocks follows a forest path and requires sturdy footwear. Those who want to examine the rock faces more closely should allow time for a longer walk.
Thousands of small cavities in the rock show where wooden beams and platforms were once fixed. These holes make it possible today to understand the original construction of the vanished fortress.
