Uzhhorod Synagogue, Former Jewish temple and concert hall in Uzhhorod, Ukraine
Uzhhorod Synagogue is a former Jewish house of worship and present-day concert venue in Ukraine's Transcarpathian region. Its exterior displays pink marble, red ceramic tiles, and copper ornaments arranged in a blend of Byzantine and Moorish architectural styles.
The building was constructed in 1904 and originally served the Jewish community as a place of worship. It was repurposed by Soviet authorities following World War II and transformed into a performance space.
The building once served as a gathering place for rabbinical scholars and community members seeking religious learning and spiritual guidance. It held meaning as a center of Jewish intellectual and social life in the region.
The building sits at Theatre Square in central Uzhhorod and serves as the primary concert hall of the Transcarpathian Regional Philharmonic. It operates as an active performance venue, so checking for scheduled events before visiting is advisable.
An organ was installed inside and the acoustics were carefully modified to suit musical performances. This allowed the building to keep its original exterior appearance while its interior was completely redesigned for concerts.
