Church of Saint George the martyr, Uzhhorod, Catholic church in central Uzhhorod, Ukraine.
The Church of Saint George the Martyr is a Catholic church in central Uzhhorod, topped by three small dome-shaped turrets and a square tower. The tower faces the street and holds a clock that has marked time in this part of the city for generations.
Count Druget had the church built in 1610 on the site where a Lutheran place of worship had previously stood. Over the following centuries, the building changed hands and use several times before returning to Catholic use.
The church is named after Saint George and displays interior paintings and decorative work from different periods. Visitors can observe the crafted details that shape the character of the prayer space.
The church is on Voloshyna Street 9 in central Uzhhorod and easy to reach on foot from most parts of the city center. Access outside of service times may be limited, so arriving around a scheduled service gives the best chance of entering.
The tower clock was first put in place in 1820 and has been replaced or redesigned several times since, each version reflecting the technology of its era. It remains one of the few parts of the building that visitors can read from both inside and outside.
