Pokrovsky Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Kyiv, Ukraine.
The Pokrovsky Monastery is an Orthodox building complex in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv, organized around the Nikolaevsky Cathedral with its three domes and central bell tower. Behind the white outer walls stand lower auxiliary buildings, a garden, and a separate chapel in Russian Revival style.
Grand Duchess Alexandra Petrovna established the monastery in 1889 as a women's convent and charitable institution. Emperor Nicholas II laid the cornerstone of the cathedral in 1896, built according to designs by Vladimir Nikolaev.
The complex houses a community of nuns who follow the Orthodox daily cycle of chanting and prayer. In the adjoining chapel you can see icons before which worshippers light candles and gather for silent contemplation.
The monastery is located at 15 Bekhterevsky Lane and can be reached on foot from Lukianivska metro station. The cathedral may be entered during services, but visitors should observe appropriate clothing and quiet behavior.
The complex originally housed a hospital with surgical departments that offered free medical care to Kyiv residents. This combination of faith and healthcare was a feature of many imperial foundations at the end of the 19th century.
