Rudne, Rural settlement near Lviv, Ukraine.
Rudne is an urban-type settlement in Zaliznytsia Raion, in the Lviv region of western Ukraine. It sits just west of Lviv, where low-rise housing, open fields and patches of woodland meet along the edge of the city.
The area was part of Austrian Galicia from the late 18th century until 1918, then came under Polish administration until 1939. It was incorporated into the Soviet Union that same year and became part of independent Ukraine in 1991.
The name Rudne likely comes from a Slavic word related to ore or mining, pointing to an old use of the land in the area. Today the settlement functions mainly as a residential community where families from Lviv have settled in search of quieter surroundings.
Rudne lies along the main road heading west from Lviv and can be reached by local bus from the city. The road passes through a busy stretch near the city limits, so allowing extra time during morning or evening hours is a good idea.
Rudne borders Lviv directly without any clear natural boundary between them, making it one of the rare places in the region where a settlement and a major city simply merge into each other. A person walking through the area would find it hard to say exactly where one ends and the other begins.
