Косівщинське водосховище, Stausee in der Ukraine
Kosivshchynskyi Reservoir is a large water body in Sumy Oblast located on the Sumka River. It covers about 132 hectares with depths varying from one to four meters, surrounded by meadows and agricultural fields with small islands dotted across the surface. Trees and shrubs on these islands add natural texture to the landscape, while the water clarity changes seasonally.
The reservoir was created in the 1960s as a technical water source for the nearby Sumy Chemical Plant and to regulate water levels on the Sumka and Psel rivers. Its construction required the relocation of local residents and the flooding of the settlement Velika Kosivshchyna, now submerged beneath the water surface. Since completion, it has served both industrial purposes and local recreation needs.
Visitors can access the water body at any time of year, best during early morning or evening hours when it is quietest. The area offers straightforward access for walks along the shore, fishing, and nature watching, with sturdy footwear recommended since shore areas can become slippery when wet.
Beneath the water surface lie the remains of the former settlement Velika Kosivshchyna, flooded when the reservoir was created. This submerged community tells a story of relocation and change, while local fish species like carp, crucian carp, and pike continue to thrive in deeper areas today.
