Mezynsky National Nature Park, Nature reserve in Chernihiv Oblast, Ukraine.
Mezynsky National Nature Park is a protected area in northern Ukraine, in Chernihiv Oblast, centered on the Desna River and its floodplains, with forests and meadows spreading along the banks. The park also covers the site of Mezyn, a well-known Paleolithic settlement that was discovered in the area.
The area along the Desna River has been inhabited since the Paleolithic period, and the Mezyn site is one of the most studied prehistoric sites in Ukraine. The park was officially designated in 2006, bringing together the protection of the natural landscape and the archaeological remains in one area.
The park has an archaeological museum where visitors can see mammoth bones and remains from a Stone Age settlement found at the site. The village of Mezyn, which gave the park its name, sits at the heart of this connection between the land and its earliest known inhabitants.
The park is most accessible from May to October, when the paths along the Desna floodplains are dry enough to walk comfortably. Checking in advance whether the archaeological museum is open is a good idea, as hours can vary depending on the season.
Excavations at Mezyn uncovered a flute made from mammoth bone, considered one of the oldest known musical instruments in the world. It was found alongside other bone objects that researchers believe may have been used as percussion instruments, suggesting music was already part of daily life here around 20,000 years ago.
