Petrivka, Urban district in Obolon Raion, Kyiv, Ukraine
Petrivka is a residential district in northern Kyiv, within Obolon Raion, made up mainly of Soviet-era apartment blocks arranged along broad, tree-lined streets. The area sits close to the Dnieper River and has a mix of schools, local shops, and small parks spread between the buildings.
The district grew in the 1970s when Soviet planners converted former wetlands into a residential zone to ease pressure on the city center. Large amounts of sand were pumped in to raise and stabilize the ground before construction could begin.
Petrivka is best known for its large open-air book market near the metro station of the same name, where sellers offer secondhand books, old maps, magazines, and collectibles. Browsers and regular buyers come here on weekends to search through stacks of printed matter laid out on tables and shelves.
The district is easy to reach by metro, as the Petrivka station connects directly to the city center line. Once there, wide streets and a clear street layout make it straightforward to get around on foot.
The Petrivka book market is said to be one of the largest of its kind in Eastern Europe, drawing collectors from across the country. Beyond books, vendors also sell Soviet-era posters, vinyl records, and rare printed matter that is hard to find anywhere else.
