National Sanctuary "Sophia of Kyiv"

The National Sanctuary Sophia of Kyiv is a museum complex spread across several buildings, including the main cathedral, the Golden Gates, Saint Cyril's Church, and Saint Andrew's Church. Each structure holds collections of archaeological finds, building materials, and historical drawings spanning different periods.

The site was established in 1934 to protect religious monuments from destruction. This institution proved crucial during a period when many sacred structures faced serious threats.

The place preserves ancient mosaics and frescoes from the 11th century that visitors can still see today. The Virgin Orans in the main cathedral's altar space stands as one of the finest examples of this religious artwork.

The complex consists of several separate churches and buildings that you can explore on foot, with guided tours offering the most thorough explanations of the collections. Plan several hours to properly visit all structures and their displays.

The complex encompasses 77 architectural monuments within its grounds, making it one of the largest preservation areas in the region. International recognition through a European award highlighted the importance of the conservation work carried out here.
