The National Sanctuary Sophia of Kyiv includes six museums featuring archaeological artifacts, architectural materials, and historical drawings across multiple buildings.
Established in 1934 during Soviet rule, this institution protected Saint Sophia Cathedral and other religious monuments from destruction during anti-religious campaigns.
The museum complex preserves ancient mosaics and frescoes from the 11th century, including the Virgin Orans mosaic in Saint Sophia Cathedral's altar.
The museum complex encompasses Saint Sophia Cathedral, Golden Gates, Saint Cyril's Church, and Saint Andrew's Church, all accessible through guided tours.
The conservation area holds 77 architectural monuments and received the European Gold Medal for Historic Monuments Conservation in 1987.
