The Southern Tower of Saint Sophia Cathedral is a solid four-tiered stone structure featuring Ukrainian Baroque architectural elements and detailed carved decorations across its exterior. The composition includes elaborate relief work and ornamental details characteristic of religious architecture from that period.
Construction took place between 1699 and 1706 with financial backing from Hetman Ivan Mazepa after a wooden predecessor burned down in 1697. The rebuilding served as part of the cathedral's restoration following this destructive fire.
The tower displays stone carvings of important religious and historical figures that reflect Orthodox traditions. These works show how Byzantine influences mixed with local Ukrainian artistic practices of that era.
The tower is accessible through the cathedral grounds, and visitors can join guided tours in multiple languages with knowledgeable guides. Comfortable shoes are recommended since exploration involves walking and potentially climbing internal stairs.
