Bell tower of Saint Sophia Cathedral

Bell tower of Saint Sophia Cathedral, Bell tower at Volodymyrska Street, Kyiv, Ukraine

The bell tower of Saint Sophia Cathedral is a tall structure with four stacked levels that narrow toward the top and end with a golden dome. A vaulted passage at ground level leads to the cathedral grounds, while spiral stairs within the northern wall provide access to the upper levels.

The tower was built between 1699 and 1706 as an expression of architectural ambition by a powerful Cossack leader. A century later it underwent fundamental renovation and received its present appearance with redesigned details.

The bell tower displays Ukrainian Baroque style with intricate stone carvings across its facade. Visitors can see angels, flowers, and eagles carved into the limestone walls, giving the structure its distinctive character.

The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the light illuminates the stone nicely. The entrance is on the street side, but check conditions beforehand since access can sometimes be limited.

The second level houses the Mazepa Bell, one of the country's largest bronze bells, cast in 1705. This historic bell is a rare example of well-preserved artistic casting from the early Baroque period.
