Lower Sula National Nature Park, Protected wetland ecosystem along Sula River in Poltava and Cherkasy, Ukraine
Lower Sula National Nature Park is a protected area of wetlands, marshes and floodplains where the Sula River flows into the Kremenchuk Reservoir. The park spreads across two regions and contains forests, water channels and open water surfaces that support diverse wildlife.
The park was created in 2010 when separate protected areas, including the Sulinsky landmark, were combined into one. This brought the river landscape and its surroundings under unified protection.
Local fishermen maintain traditional practices within designated areas of the park, continuing generations of sustainable resource management along the Sula River.
The park can be reached by train from Kyiv to Lubny or by bus, with several entry points providing access to walking trails. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and prepare for wet ground conditions, especially during rainy seasons.
The park contains eight forest islands rising from waterways, each creating its own conditions for specialized plant and animal communities. These isolated woodland patches form refuges for rare species adapted to this fragmented landscape.
