National Nature Park Prypiat-Stokhid, National nature park in Volyn Oblast, Ukraine
National Nature Park Prypiat-Stokhid is a protected area covering over 39,000 hectares with rivers, lakes, wetlands, sandy islands, and peatlands spread across two river valleys. The terrain includes forests, wet meadows, and extensive water systems that create a varied natural landscape.
The protected area was established in 2007 by Ukraine's Ministry of Environmental Protection to safeguard the natural systems of the region. This designation acknowledged the ecological value of the river and wetland landscapes.
Local communities maintain traditional haymaking practices and prepare regional food specialties using wood-fired ovens, which you can still observe in villages throughout the area. These customs reflect how people have adapted to living alongside the rivers and wetlands for generations.
The park is accessible via train stations in Manevychi, Kovel, and Lutsk, with regular bus connections from major cities across Ukraine. Your entry point depends on which area of the park you want to explore.
The name Stokhid translates to 'river of a hundred turns' and refers to its extraordinarily winding course through the landscape. These countless twists create an intricate water network that can feel maze-like when exploring the park.
