Kamin-Kashyrskyi Raion, Administrative district in Volyn Oblast, Ukraine
Kamin-Kashyrskyi Raion is an administrative district in the Volyn Oblast of northwestern Ukraine, made up of the town of Kamin-Kashyrskyi and roughly sixty other settlements. The territory is mostly rural, with small villages scattered across a flat landscape crossed by forests and rivers.
The district was created in 1940 under Soviet rule and went through several border changes over the following decades. The 2020 administrative reform in Ukraine redrew its boundaries and reorganized its internal structure.
The area sits at a crossroads where Ukrainian, Polish, and Belarusian traditions have long mixed, which you can still notice in local architecture, place names, and village customs. Walking through the smaller settlements, you may spot roadside shrines and wooden churches that reflect this layered local identity.
The settlements are spread far apart, so having your own vehicle is the most practical way to move between villages. Roads are mostly paved, but tracks leading to more remote spots can be rough, especially after rain.
The district name joins the Ukrainian word for stone with a reference to the Sanguszko-Koshyrski noble family who once ruled the area from their estate. The estate itself is long gone, but the name keeps their presence alive in everyday speech.
