Gord Zamok in Staryi Chortoryisk

Gord Zamok in Staryi Chortoryisk is a medieval fortress sitting on high ground near the Styr River, ringed by earthen ramparts and stone walls with defensive towers. The remaining structures show the layout of the original stronghold, with visible foundations and sections of wall that outline the former residential and military spaces.

First mentioned in 1100, this fortress served as a residence for Prince David Igorevich, a grandson of Yaroslav the Wise. Over time it evolved into a major seat of power and eventually gave its name to the Czartoryski noble family who made it their ancestral home.

The Czartoryski family took their surname from this location and built their noble identity around it for centuries. Walking through the ruins today, you can still sense how this place became central to their family story and heritage.

The ruins sit on raised ground and are generally easy to navigate, though the terrain can become muddy and uneven depending on weather and season. Wear sturdy footwear and allow time to walk around the entire perimeter to get a full sense of the fortress layout and views toward the river.
