The fortress, first mentioned in 1100, served as a residence for Prince David Igorevich, grandson of Yaroslav the Wise.
The castle became the ancestral seat of the Czartoryski family in the 1430s, giving them their surname and establishing their noble lineage.
The castle remains include foundations, defensive earthworks, and structural elements that demonstrate medieval fortification techniques of the Volyn region.
The fortress location at a strategic point on the Styr River made it a key defensive position known as the Gateway to Volhynia.
