Nikolai Vatutin monument, Soviet military monument in Mariinskyi Park, Kyiv, Ukraine
The Nikolai Vatutin monument is a stone memorial in Kyiv depicting a Soviet military leader. It was constructed from granite and rose roughly 8.55 meters from the ground.
The monument was unveiled on January 25, 1948, created by Soviet sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and architect Iakov Bielopolski. It represented a major Soviet military memorial from the postwar period established in Ukraine.
The inscription presented the monument as a gift from the Ukrainian people to the General. This dedication linked local memory to a Soviet narrative that shaped the cityscape for decades.
The monument was formerly located near the Ukrainian Parliament building in central Kyiv. Authorities removed it in February 2023 as part of a national decommunization process.
The General's remains were buried beneath the monument, which later sparked discussions about their relocation. This connection between memorial and burial site made it a distinctive place of remembrance.
