Chervonohorod Castle

Chervonohorod Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Nyrkiv, Ukraine

Chervonohorod Castle is a castle ruin situated on a steep hill overlooking the Dzhuryn River valley in the Ternopil region. Two towers remain standing from the original square-shaped fortress that once stood here.

The fortress was originally built as a defensive structure, but in 1778 Prince Karol Poninski acquired it and completely rebuilt it. He transformed it into a palace featuring Italian-style terraces and stone columns.

The castle served as a residence for the Danilowicz family and shows how Ukrainian nobility built and decorated their homes in the 17th century. Visitors can still sense how the owners once lived and what mattered to them.

The site is reachable through the village of Nyrkiv in Ternopil Oblast and sits on a steep hillside. Bring sturdy shoes and allow time for climbing, as the ruins are located on an elevated slope.

The name Chervonohorod translates directly to 'Red Town' and refers to the red soil of the area that inspired the place's name. This detail shows how place names often connect to their natural surroundings.
