Tovste, Rural settlement in Chortkiv Raion, Ukraine.
Tovste is a settlement on the banks of the Tupa River in western Ukraine, positioned along the main road connecting Ternopil and Chernivtsi. It sits at 282 meters elevation and serves as the administrative hub for a region that includes 25 surrounding villages spread across 340 square kilometers.
The settlement was first recorded in 1414 as Tolste and received Magdeburg rights in 1548, granting it local self-governance and trade privileges. This special status remained until 1944, when a significant administrative shift transformed its formal standing.
Three religious buildings shape the town's character: the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Anne, the Greek Catholic Church of Saint Michael, and a Ukrainian Orthodox Church. These structures reflect the diverse spiritual traditions that have coexisted in this place for generations.
The settlement is easily accessible via the main road between two larger cities, making travel straightforward. Visitors planning to explore religious sites and get a sense of the place should allow time to visit each of the three main buildings at a relaxed pace.
Archaeological evidence reveals that humans lived in this area as far back as the 9th century, leaving behind traces of two ancient cultures. The layers of settlement uncovered by researchers tell a story of continuous inhabitation that stretches much deeper into the past than the medieval records suggest.
