Vysokyi Verkh, Summit in Zakarpattia Oblast, Ukraine.
Vysokyi Verkh is a mountain summit in the Ukrainian Carpathians, located in Zakarpattia Oblast, and sits at 1,413 meters above sea level. It is part of a cluster of peaks connected by forested slopes and open ridgelines.
The Carpathian region around this peak belonged to the Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia in the medieval period, then passed through several different rulers over the centuries. In the 20th century, the area was part of Czechoslovakia before being incorporated into the Soviet Union after World War II.
The name Vysokyi Verkh simply means "high peak" in Ukrainian, which reflects how directly people in this region name their landscape. In the valleys below, shepherds still bring their flocks to the high pastures in summer, continuing a practice that has shaped the look of the slopes for generations.
The summit can be reached by marked hiking trails, and the approach from the northeast offers the most gradual ascent. Weather in the Carpathians can change quickly, so starting early in the day and wearing sturdy footwear is a good idea regardless of the season.
Although the summit is not the highest in the Ukrainian Carpathians, its position on the ridge allows views into three separate valleys at the same time, which is uncommon on this side of the range. This makes it a favored spot for hikers wanting to read the shape of the landscape around them.
