Manchester Airport, International airport in Ringway, England
Manchester Airport is a major hub in northern England with three passenger terminals and a cargo terminal spread across more than five square kilometers. The facility connects the region to hundreds of destinations through numerous international airlines.
The airport opened in 1929 as Ringway Airport and served during World War II as the military base RAF Ringway. After the war it grew into one of the busiest civilian airports in Britain.
Families and aviation enthusiasts gather at the Runway Visitor Park to watch planes take off and land while walking among retired aircraft, including a preserved Concorde. This viewing area has become a local tradition, offering a way to experience the rhythm of airport life from close range.
The airport sits about nine miles (15 kilometers) south of the city center and connects to northern England through an onsite train station. All three terminals link together via walkways and a free shuttle bus, making it easy for passengers to move between buildings.
An expansion project for Terminal 2 will increase the capacity of the facility significantly and reshape operations for years to come. During construction all terminals remain open, allowing travelers to witness the transformation in progress.
