Lindisfarne Priory, Medieval priory ruins on Holy Island, England
The stone remains of Lindisfarne Priory stand on a small tidal island, featuring Norman architectural elements and a preserved rainbow arch.
Founded in 635 by Saint Aidan, the monastery became a primary target for Viking raids, leading to its abandonment by monks in 875.
The Lindisfarne Gospels, created at the monastery during the 8th century, demonstrate the fusion of Celtic, Germanic, and Roman artistic traditions.
Access to the priory depends on tide schedules, as the causeway connecting Holy Island to mainland Northumberland floods twice daily.
The monastery's original wooden structure was replaced by stone buildings in 1093, which continue to serve as an active Christian pilgrimage site.
