Glossop, Market town in High Peak, England
Glossop is a town in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, positioned at the edge of the Peak District National Park. The settlement spreads across several valleys, surrounded by moorland hills that rise immediately beyond the built areas.
The settlement grew rapidly during the 19th century as a center for cotton spinning, with mills using soft water from surrounding streams. Industry drew workers from the region and shaped the layout of the town over several generations.
The architecture of Glossop reflects its industrial heritage through sandstone buildings, including the Town Hall and former cotton mills that hold protected historical status.
The railway station lies close to the center and offers direct connections to Manchester, while bus routes link surrounding villages and towns. Walking trails into the hills start from several points at the edge of town and are well marked.
Nearby lie the remains of a Roman fort from the first century, rediscovered in the late 18th century. The site is now known as Melandra Castle and is accessible to visitors.
