Catterick Garrison, Military garrison and town in Richmondshire, England
Catterick Garrison is a military garrison and town in Richmondshire, North Yorkshire, spreading across a large site with around thirteen thousand residents. Barracks buildings, housing estates, shops, and leisure facilities form a connected area with its own roads, parks, and public squares.
The military site began in 1914 during World War I as Richmond Camp and was renamed the following year. It has since grown into a permanent installation, expanded throughout both World Wars and afterward.
The site has carried its name since 1915 and now houses families of soldiers from across the United Kingdom. Children attend local schools alongside civilian neighbors, giving daily life a mix of military routine and small-town rhythm.
The leisure center offers a swimming pool and a seven-screen cinema, accessible to visitors from the surrounding area. Several shops and services are located near the main roads and residential zones.
A cemetery dating from 1930 sits on the grounds and contains graves of military personnel from Commonwealth countries. The headstones range from World War I to later decades, offering a quiet place of remembrance.
